Prerequisites
The successful image consultant will have a strong interest in clothes, fashion and style, as well as excellent self-presentation and communication skills.
Although no specific academic qualifications are required, experience working in sectors such as retail, training, human resources, personal development, health, beauty, fashion and styling, is a particular advantage. An ability to relate to people whatever their age, background and status is essential. Foundation training in core subjects is highly recommended by the NZFIC and the IFIC.
Career Development
Consultants join the profession from a variety of fields and may eventually decide to specialise in specific areas. Career development will depend on individual expertise, past experience and interests.
Building a business takes time and for long-term success it is necessary to establish a reputation and promote the business to potential clients through advertising, PR and involvement with local business and networking groups. Most training companies will offer courses in business and marketing.
